Ground Water Academy
(VGWA) is
a downloadable educational software package designed as an alternative
to college level textbooks on ground water. VGWA is authored by Dr.
Gary A. Robbins, Professor of Geology at the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Robbins has over 20 years of experience in the ground water profession
as a regulator, environmental consultant, researcher and educator.
Dr.
Robbins is also an accomplished IT professional and is a recipient
of the University of Connecticut, Chancellor's Information Technology
Award.
He recently authored the award winning CD "Expedited
Site Assessment: The CD", multimedia technical guidance on
conducting investigations at UST sites published by the Connecticut
Department of Environmental Protection.
Key elements
of VGWA include:
- Broad Market Base
VGWA has three interconnected paths of varying levels of knowledge.
Hence, it is useful in environmental science, hydrogeology and environmental
engineering courses. It is also structured to serve as an in-classroom
teaching aid to enhance lectures and laboratory exercises. VGWA is
also a comprehensive reference for environmental professionals.
- Multimedia
Multimedia elements include simulations, animations, animated instructions,
slide presentations, video, and QuickTime virtual reality movies.
VGWA is packed with pictures illustrating the characteristics of different
hydrogeologic regimes and pertinent ground water-related conditions
and features.
- Interactivity
VGWA contains "hands-on" simulations of: analytical, hydraulic
and remediation-related equipment; geotechnical tests; soil and ground
water sampling and on-site analyses; and laboratory and field hydraulic
tests. In addition, the software contains "real world" exercises
in conducting ground water investigations for water resources and
contamination, and in conducting contaminant remediation.
- Data Analysis
The software contains dozens of helpful spreadsheet templates for
analyzing hydraulic tests, water quality data and contaminant
transport.
- Internet Connectivity
VGWA is enhanced by a support web site. At the web site you can chat
with the author, view video, obtain upgrades and find
additional
reference material.
